CAPITAL INVESTMENTS IN UKRAINE DURING MARTIAL LAW: STRUCTURAL AND SECTORAL STATISTICAL ANALYSIS
Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of structural and sectoral features of capital investments in Ukraine during 2020-2024, a period when the country's economic development underwent profound transformations caused by the state of war. The purpose of the study is to conduct a systematic analysis of the dynamics of capital investment
inflows, identify key trends in their distribution by type of economic activity, and assess the ratio of tangible and intangible assets in the overall investment structure. The analysis revealed that after a sharp decline in capital investment in 2022, investment activity in Ukraine is gradually recovering, particularly in sectors that ensure the country's defense capabilities. This is because business activity is already growing in 2023–2024, and there are signs of stabilization in the investment environment. Under the new conditions, the largest volumes of capital investment are concentrated in industry, wholesale and retail trade, public administration, and the defense sector. These areas are considered leading ones when analyzing absolute investment indicators and examining their growth dynamics, which defines their decisive role in supporting the economic stability of the state. At the same time, structural imbalances in the composition of capital investments have been studied. Specifically, an analysis of the share of tangible and intangible assets shows a predominance of investments in tangible components, which account for 92-99% of the total volume. At the same time, investments in intangible assets, in particular in scientific research, innovative solutions, and technologies, remain minimal. This investment model emphasizes the critical need for tangible assets in key areas to support the country's defense capabilities and, at the same time, creates risks of technological backwardness. A partial reorientation and enhancement of the role of intangible assets in the overall structure of capital investments may become a prerequisite for the formation of Ukraine's long-term competitiveness and the effective restoration of its investment and economic potential in the post-war years.
