Abstract
The issue of territorial development is the subject of research by many scholars in various fields of knowledge: economists, sociologists, urban planners and others. More often in the field of research researchers fall into the problem of industrial areas. However, in the context of current global geopolitical, socio-economic and socio-cultural changes, it is advisable to explore the importance of global cities and their development potential. The processes caused by convergence and the formation of new geopolitical centers determine the world trends in the evolution of socio-economic relations. The aim of the article is to review the essence and role of the global city as a civilizational phenomenon in the context of changes in socio-cultural and socio-economic environment caused by large-scale socio-economic shocks and identify prospects for further development of Ukraine. Their role in the modern information economy is analyzed. The criteria for classifying cities as global are researched. The importance of convergence for regional development is outlined. Is paid attention to widening the gaps in socio-economic development between countries, as well as between the global city and the rest of the country in which it is located. The article presents a list of prerequisites for successful development of the city with the prospect of transforming it into a global one. Areas of specialization of global cities and their evolution under the influence of the scientific and technological revolution are analyzed. The paper emphasizes the list of service industries that should be developed in post-industrial economies. The stages of development of global cities and the list of relevant industries that prevailed in each of them are presented. Global cities are the centers where the main stakeholders and head offices of transnational companies specializing in financial and economic, telecommunications and logistics services, as well as software development, are concentrated. In analogy with city-states, modern global cities acquire separate significance and play the role of independent players at the level of the global economy. Kyiv is a world beta city. Geographically, the closest alpha cities are Warsaw, Istanbul, Budapest and Moscow. Such neighborhood has its own socio-economic and geopolitical consequences and should be taken into account in the further development of both the city and the country as a whole.
